The quality of spiked shoes was enhanced by transitioning from heavy metal spikes (The previous model) to rubber and canvas. In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Dassler persuaded Jesse Owens, a US sprinter, to wear his handmade spikes. Adidas designed the Trefoil logo in 1971, launched in 1972 and lasted until 1997 when the Three Bars logo was introduced. After the split of the two brothers in 1974, the company was later sold to French industrialist Bernard Tapie in 1987.
