What is the origin of the Adidas Gazelle model?

Adidas is a shoe brand rooted in Adi Dassler and his son’s obsession with footwear performance. Therefore, because of the licensing deal, you will never get a “true” incarnation of Adidas Gazelle worldwide. Before the introduction of Gazelle in the footwear market, Adidas had other designs to pave the way for its success.

During the 1960 Rome Olympics, Rom was the popular leather shoe characterised by a suede toe overlay and ripple sole. In 1964, they were the German team favourite in the Olympiade, with cutting-edge performance (the back of the shoe had a pull tab). The design DNA was upgraded in 1966 to form the first ever produced Adidas Gazelle shoe. The use of suede material at that time was unique and used on two Gazelle iterations.

The Gazelle sneakers moved in and out of the Adidas brand catalogue in the 70s between 1972 and 1979. The shoe design seemed to be superseded by training shoes, Athens, which led to its replacement by Jaguar (a lookalike shoe in blue or red). Adidas implemented a new concept in 1979 to upgrade old performance favourites to maintain relevance. Gazelle got the transparent sole made of Adidas Trefoil, redesigned forefoot and a new shape. Originally, Gazelle was offered in the blue and red colourway, with white stripes.

 Why choose the Gazelle model?

Even though Adidas Gazelle sneakers have maintained their reputation in the footwear industry since their inception in the 60s as a performance shoe, it has also proven to be one of the best and hottest trainer designs. In the 80s, Gazelle become the favourite pair for Terence Casual Crowd, Brit Poppers and Hip Hop fans worldwide, thanks to its performance.

This trainer is popular with a large population worldwide thanks to its unique features and characteristics. Different people love Adidas Gazelle based on different reasons that include:

  • Soft pigskin suede
  • Original outsole
  • Offers a perfect vintage feel and look
  • Lower profile
  • Lighter than modern counterpart because of the shorter tongue, slightly slimmer cut and smaller toe box

Adidas Gazelle trainers are perfect for both walking and running. There are ideal for short runs, but you can do ten or fifteen miles with no problem. Its lightweight characteristic makes Adidas Gazelle suitable for weightlifting and the likes. The wide colourway is perfect for different seasons and styles.

On what occasions can you wear Adidas Gazelle?

Initially, Adidas Gazelle was used as a training shoe and came only in blue and red colours. The blue trainers were made for harder training sessions, while the red edition was for handball. The use of suede made the shoe more popular among sneakerheads. Gazelle steadily transitioned from performance to fashion shoe in 1970, capturing the attention of many Hip Hop stars, musical style icons and models and indie rockers in the 90s.

Because of that, you can wear Adidas Gazelle sneakers on most occasions, depending on your preference and choice. The burgundy colourways presented by this amazing shoe make it suitable for almost every occasion, including:

  • Running
  • Weightlifting
  • Walking
  • Date night
