Mario Polegato founded the Company in 1995. The name of the shoe brand “Geox” comes to be by mixing two Greek words, “geo” and “X”. Geo means earth while X symbolises technology. The idea of developing Geox came when Mario was in Reno for a wine industry conference. His feet got hot while jogging in Reno’s hot climate, and he thought to cut holes in the sole using a Swiss Army knife.

With the help of his family-owned business, a leather-goods company, Mario Polegato developed his shoe idea into a viable (breathable shoe) product. He started with kids’ footwear which did well as a market testing product, then went for men's and women's shoes with the Geox brand name. He pitched his shoe idea to several footwear manufacturers and started large-scale production.
