What is the history of Puma?

Puma is a multinational corporation headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Germany. Puma SE is the 3rd largest sportswear designer and manufacturer that deal with casual and athletic footwear, accessories and apparel.

After the fallout of the Dassler brothers, Rudolf Dassler founded Puma in 1948. The two brothers, Rudolf and Adolf Adi Dassler, had a shoe factory together under the name Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik. They decided to split in 1948 after their relationship deteriorated, forming two different entities, Puma and Adidas.

Rudolf registered his company as Ruda (from RUdolf and DAssler) but later changed into Puma. Initially, the registered Puma logo consisted of a beast jumping through a D and a square with the company‘s name. However, in 1958 the company changed the logo to a distinctive “Formstrip” and the Puma logo.

Puma developed its new cushioning system in 1985: the Running System (RS). The RS ensures that the sole combine four different components, each with unique chemical and physical characteristics, forming a single unit that can control motion and absorb shock.

In 1986, Puma became a public company and was listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and Börse München. The company completed its conversion in 2011 from a German public limited company to the European Union-wide equivalent. Now, the brand offer products for Basketball, Football, Golf, Sportstyle, Motorsport, running, training and fitness.
