What is the origin of the Asics brand?

Asics is among the well-known multinational corporation producing sportswear (Japanese). The name "Asics" came from the Latin phrase "anima sana in corpore Sano," which translate to "a sound mind, in a sound body." Asics Corporation manufactures and markets footwear like sandals and sneakers, clothing, and accessories.

Kihachiro Onitsuka started the Asics shoe brand on Sept 1st, 1949. The company began with the first basketball shoes in Kobe, Hyogo prefecture, Japan (his hometown), in 1950. In 1954, Asics started to use durable, lightweight, and water-resistant material in all shoe models like AFTER BOOTS. Running shoes were released in 1960 in an attempt to come up with blister-proof shoes.

The company serviced many sports activities, which later expanded to various Olympic styles adopted by athletes throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Asics' founder was popular after developing Mexico 66 design, containing the crossed stripes for the first time. The shoe was popularised by the famous actor Bruce Lee. In 1966, clarion synthetic leather was used in athletic shoes to make them water resistant. The RUNSPARK series was released in the same year with interchangeable pin spiked shoes.

The merge between Onitsuka Tiger, athletic uniform maker Jelenk, and GTO (fishing and sporting good company) in 1977 formed the Asics Corporation. Despite the changes in the company, most vintage Asics shoes are produced and marketed worldwide under the original Onitsuka Tiger label.
