What is the history of the shoe brand Clarks?

C. & J. Clarks International Ltd, famously trading as Clarks, is one of the top British international shoe retailers and manufacturers. It was founded by Two Quaker brothers (James and Cyrus Clarks) in 1825 in Street village, Somerset, England (the company is still headquartered there). Clarks have more than 1400 franchises and branded stores worldwide and also sells through third-party.

The Clarks' eureka story began almost 2 centuries ago by making rugs from sheepskins. The brothers used to make slippers out of the offcuts. The shoe model Brown Petersburg was the first Clarks shoes to be made.

The Clarks brothers continued to develop great shoe designs and win different design awards in the Great Exhibition. The real innovation came in 1873 when William Clark (James Clark's son) established C. & J. Clarks as a new technology pioneer and footwear innovation champion through mechanising the shoemaking process – wanted to speed up the production process by investing in a singer sewing machine.

Technology and new innovation continued to be part of Clarks' stature. Clarks launched their first Hygienic shoe ranges in 1883 to fit different foot shapes. In the 1900s, they expanded the design by moving into women's shoes. The company developed a system that measured children's feet to correctly create and fit kid shoes.

Nathan Clark designed the first and famously known desert boots, inspired by the bazaar's boots worn in Cairo in the 2nd world war by British Army Officers. Since then, they have been a massive hit and an iconic staple of Clarks' look. They moved the boots to new technology and material, and made a colossal expansion to be a worldwide brand.

What type of shoes does Clarks offer?

With one of the richest heritage dates almost 2 centuries back, Clarks is popular worldwide for the timelessness and quality of its footwear. However, people tend to forget this brand's influence on the overall footwear market, especially the Originals Wallabee silhouette.

Now, Clarks has developed more than 20,000 shoe styles that offer a wide variety of options for men, women, girls, and boys.
