What is the history of the Timberland brand?

Timberland is a world-renowned footwear and apparel manufacturer with humble beginnings in a small area of South Boston, Massachusetts, and started as Abington Shoe Company. Nathan Swartz founded the Timberland brand in 1952 after he bought a half interest in a shoe company in Abington, Massachusetts (Abington Shoe Company). After three years, Nathan Swartz bought the remaining shares and introduced his youngest son to the company.

After Nathan's retirement, his son moved the company to a new location in New Hampshire, where he focused on producing tough, waterproof boots for ravages of time. Within no time, the company developed durable, comfortable and water-resistant boots. The boots were made in Canada and sold in the US by Vermont-based Dunham Company.

The Swartzes were determined to develop their own better version. In the 1960s, Timberland introduced an innovative injection-moulding technology that revolutionised the shoe industry by developing the first waterproof, high-quality boots. The water-resistant Timberland was made specifically for blue-collar workers and army-navy stores.

The success of the most popular footwear model (the Timberland boots) made the company to be renamed in the 70s before its international breakthrough in the 80s. In 1984, Timberland brands were successful and poised for more, catching the attention of several acquisitive. The brand expanded to be an industry icon, worn by famous people like rappers (Mobb Deep and DMX).
