Havaianas is a Brazilian brand of flip-flops designed and created in 1962. The company’s headquarters is in Sao Paulo, with regional offices in Madrid, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. Its creation was inspired by a Japanese sandal called zori, and the word Havaianas is derived from the Portuguese word Hawaiians. The company is currently owned by Alpargatas S.A (a Brazilian manufacturing company).

Originally, Havaianas were designed with coloured straps and outsole and white insole. Due to their low price and simplicity, Havaianas sandals were popular with the lowest social class in Brazil, but now they control more than 80% of the Brazilian rubber slippers market. A new fashion trend started in 1990, where soles were inverted to make the outsole face upwards to create monochromatic sandals.

This made Havaianas release a new line of sandals with eight one-colour in 1994 called Havaianas Top, which were the all-time favourite for lower, middle and higher classes. In 1998, Havaianas designed a new line of flip-flops (Havaianas Copa) featuring straps with a small Brazilian flag, showing support to the Brazilian team in the FIFA World Cup in France.

In 1999, Havaianas spread rapidly to the rest of the world and started distributing in Italy, Spain, the USA, Japan, Portugal and the Dominican Republic. In 2000, the company designed a special model that could glow in the dark and less than 3 years later, Havaianas won the Oscar Award. Now, Havaianas can be found in 100+ countries worldwide.

Ads and marketing communication wouldn't be enough for Havaianas’ lovers to see the sandals as a premium product. Therefore, extra features were added to the footwear to make customers see them as valuable. This was possible when the company hired designers in the industry.
