Skechers is a relatively young company founded by Robert Greenberg and his son Michael in 1992. Greenberg was also the founder of LA gear in 1983. The early products were mainly skating shoes and utility-style boots (he decided to major in the men’s casual footwear market). Since then, the company has diversified in production to include casual, performance style and athleisure for all ages and apparel.

Initially, Skechers was supposed to be Dr. Martens Shoes' distributing outlet for importing and distributing Karl Kani and Cross Colour brands. However, it did take long until Greenberg realised his passion lies in developing, designing, and marketing his unique footwear range. Greenberg saw an opening in casual street shoes and went for it. Therefore, he aimed his efforts to appeal to hip and young customers. Skechers released its first big hit in 1993: the Chrome Dome, a worn and scuffed-looking unisex urban street boots.
