Mario Polegato founded the Company in 1995. The name of the shoe brand “Geox” comes to be by mixing two Greek words, “geo” and “X”. Geo means earth while X symbolises technology. The idea of developing Geox came when Mario was in Reno for a wine industry conference. His feet got hot while jogging in Reno’s hot climate, and he thought to cut holes in the sole using a Swiss Army knife.

With the help of his family-owned business, a leather-goods company, Mario Polegato developed his shoe idea into a viable (breathable shoe) product. He started with kids’ footwear which did well as a market testing product, then went for men's and women's shoes with the Geox brand name. He pitched his shoe idea to several footwear manufacturers and started large-scale production.

Geox shoes are manufactured in different factories worldwide, mainly in Indonesia, China and Vietnam. Since its introduction in the market, Geox group has spent a lot of money on innovations of great and comfortable footwear to meet market demand. It has led to collaborations with universities and research facilities to test and refine new shoe technology.
